The island of Sumatra is the largest in Indonesia, and more than 45 million inhabitants who speak 52 different languages call this tropical paradise home. Like many Indonesian people, these gentle Sumatrans share a steadfast sense of tradition, enduring family values, and an industrious nature. Nearly a million people live in the bustling capital city of Padang, a rich cultural center with museums, restaurants, and white sandy beaches, situated on a rolling coastal plain surrounded by towering, lush mountains.
On September 30th, 2009, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Sumatra, devastating Padang and its peaceable inhabitants. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands injured in the aftermath of the quake. Homes and businesses were destroyed, and the once-thriving city was thrown into chaos and ruin.
