HELPING SUMATRA EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

The island of Sumatra is the largest in Indonesia, and more than 45 million inhabitants who speak 52 different languages call this tropical paradise home. Like many Indonesian people, these gentle Sumatrans share a steadfast sense of tradition, enduring family values, and an industrious nature. Nearly a million people live in the bustling capital city of Padang, a rich cultural center with museums, restaurants, and white sandy beaches, situated on a rolling coastal plain surrounded by towering, lush mountains.

On September 30th, 2009, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Sumatra, devastating Padang and its peaceable inhabitants. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands injured in the aftermath of the quake. Homes and businesses were destroyed, and the once-thriving city was thrown into chaos and ruin.

This holiday season, we at Anna Beck want to offer our support. For the month of December, a portion of all online purchases will go toward a Sumatran earthquake relief fund, dedicated to helping the families affected by this tragedy. Whether you purchase a handcrafted Anna Beck piece for a friend, family member, or colleague, you’re giving more than a gift; you’re helping people rebuild their lives, businesses, and way of life.

THE STORY OF TIMOR

The Indonesian island of Timor is famous for it's textiles, or “tais” in Timorese. Last year I traveled there by boat and each time we moored, the local villagers would canoe out to show us their beautiful handmade rugs, blankets and throws. They were all so different and unique with intricate colors, textures and patterns. The villagers explained that each tais design represents a story or belief from the Timorese culture, and that these pieces remain an integral part of the Timorese heritage today.

These culturally rich fabrics inspired me to create the Anna Beck Timor range. Each handmade item is layered and woven like the Timorese textiles, with intricate detail and earthy contour. I especially love the twisted cuffs and rings, which were inspired by a particularly beautiful and elaborate Timorese tapestry which took my breath away. I hope you find them just as special.
